Who Is Bill Knowles
Bill Knowles is a follower of Jesus Christ, a longtime conservative civic servant and a family man. The first Knowles moved to Hamilton County in 1908 when Petway Knowles moved down from White County and opened a local market on Dodds Avenue.
County Clerk Knowles has served for 47 years—a record for a local elected official in this office. Through his years in leading a professional staff, the office has received numerous awards from The National Association of Counties for innovative changes.
The County Officials Association of Tennessee (COAT) elected him as the Outstanding Official of the Year for 2006. He was cited for keeping his office on the cutting-edge of technology.
Prior to being elected as County Clerk in 1974 Bill served his community as Director of Manpower and Training for the Concentrated Employment Program located in the Warner Park Field House. It was a project designed to develop jobs for the disadvantaged. He also earned a Master License to Barber
Bill has been married to Marlene Coulter Knowles since 1955. They have three
adult children: Reba, Finley and Alan. Bill and Marlene are blessed with eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
